“We only spoke once, on the phone, but our coaching session was of enormous benefit. In our conversation you focused on finding your authentic voice. I was inspired by your words, and took them with me on my lecture trip to Chile, in October 2007. Spanish is my second language. I am fluent but I’m far more comfortable in English. I wanted to make a real connection with the people I addressed, so I decided not to use an interpreter.

 Being authentic meant that I had to take some risks. There were times when I asked for help from the audience (usually my host).  But rather than my asking for occasional help being a turn off, it made the audience feel quite connected with me. It was as if they adopted me.  Their warmth was overwhelming. Before I left, there were talking to me about my return. And one of the pastors added another speaking engagement right before my departure back to the States.
 Lecturing in my second language was unnerving at first, but daring to be authentic helped me to quickly find a comfort level. And I made many new friends. The authenticity message was the “wind beneath my wings” on an extraordinary trip.”
